Form Supplied in: white crystalline solid; commercially available. Handling, Storage, and Precautions: hygroscopic; store under a dry atmosphere. Water‐soluble gadolinium salts are known to be toxic, with acute intoxication leading to potentially life‐threatening conditions such as nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. 1,2 Preparation: Gd(O i Pr) 3 ( 1 ) can be prepared by refluxing anhydrous GdCl 3 in isopropanol, followed by the addition of Na(O i Pr) 3 and reflux for another two hours. 3 Alternatively, refluxing gadolinium shavings in isopropanol with catalytic HgCl 2 , followed by recrystallization from benzene. 4–6
