Abstract

This entry discusses challenges around TESOL materials for developing intercultural communicative competence (ICC) and pedagogical suggestions for teachers, coursebook editors, and educational authorities. This entry examines cultural representations and activities in coursebooks, pointing out limitations of diversity and dynamicity of cultural content and limitations of activities for developing EFL learners' ICC from attitudes, knowledge, and skills aspects. The entry advocates for inclusion of diverse and evolving cultural representations in coursebooks and for teachers to adapt materials to foster ICC through student‐centered, experiential learning activities with authentic materials and activities for developing critical thinking and language production. Additionally, this entry emphasizes the role of coursebook editors and educational authorities in supporting teachers through appropriate teaching materials and professional development programs. A collaborative effort is called for to ensure that ICC becomes an integral part of language education, equipping learners with the skills to engage meaningfully in a globalized world.
