Oral Narrative Interventions in Teaching Second Language Speaking
Abstract
Oral narrative intervention focuses on training students to tell or retell stories in a target language. This holistic approach integrates typical components such as story comprehension, contextualized vocabulary learning, and question‐answering. By combining these elements with storytelling, learners receive rich, engaging, and interactive opportunities to refine their speaking skills. The literature suggests that oral narrative intervention leads to improved overall speaking proficiency, narrative skills, and pronunciation. The entry outlines guidelines for narrative intervention design within language classrooms, and provides pedagogical suggestions for its implementation. Future directions highlight the systematic integration of story grammar instruction, personal storytelling, and multimodal support in narrative interventions, as well as the development of accessible digital storytelling tools to facilitate digital integration.
