Abstract

Written academic discourse socialization (ADS) provides a framework for understanding how students learn to participate in disciplinary writing practices, concentrating typically in higher education settings. It foregrounds the roles of feedback, identity, community, and institutional practices in shaping writing development and argues for making academic expectations explicit to support student participation and success. By foregrounding the situated and complex nature of academic language use and development, ADS enables examinations of writing and writing development while also offering pedagogical insights to support teaching and learning.
