Abstract

This chapter seeks to rethink France's colonial and post-colonial relationships of these decades with the tools of global history and a post-imperial perspective, stressing the importance of transnational exchanges through the study of artists' circulations and meetings in the festivals and exhibitions, which played an active role in the geopolitics of culture. In 1966, the Festival Mondial des arts Nègres was organized in Dakar, an international event that brought together dancers, jazz musicians, artists, and intellectuals from all over the world to highlight the contribution of Africa and it's diaspora to the world. After focusing on artists from the first generation of the École the Paris, Chagall and Picasso, the subsequent exhibitions were dedicated to painters who emerged after 1945.
