Hand Gesture Recognition
Abstract
This chapter starts by exploring the physiological basis of hand gestures, then discusses different tracking technologies, examines gesture recognition techniques, associated hardware and software implementations, and analyzes real-world applications of gesture tracking systems. Additionally, it addresses the technical challenges and future trends shaping the development of hand gesture interaction, emphasizing its growing role in immersive and intelligent digital environments. The chapter provides an overview of the hand's biomechanics and categorizes common gesture types relevant to interaction design in virtual reality and augmented reality systems and applications. It presents the core techniques involved in gesture recognition algorithms, including feature extraction methods, machine learning models, pattern recognition techniques, and strategies for real-time processing. The chapter examines the key pattern recognition techniques, including template matching, Hidden Markov Models, and Dynamic Time Warping. It reviews the various applications of hand gesture tracking across different domains, demonstrating how this technology enhances usability, accessibility, and the overall immersive experience.
