Facial Expression Recognition
Abstract
Early attempts at facial expression recognition began in the late 20th century, with researchers developing algorithms to analyze static images of faces for basic emotional cues like happiness, sadness, or anger. Real-time facial expression tracking allows avatars to mirror the user's emotions and reactions, fostering a sense of presence and authenticity. This chapter explores the physiology, technologies, applications, and implications of facial expression tracking in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) systems, highlighting how it contributes to immersive, interactive, and emotionally engaging virtual experiences. Facial expression tracking in VR and AR relies on advanced hardware and software systems to capture, analyze, and interpret facial movements. These movements are subsequently mapped onto digital avatars or used as interactive controls in virtual environments. The chapter reviews these core technologies, explaining the principles, mathematical models, and algorithms that enable facial expression tracking.
