Accessibility and Inclusivity
Abstract
Accessibility and inclusivity are important dimensions of designing virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) systems that aim to serve diverse users and contexts. In addition to accessibility and inclusivity, this chapter addresses the ethical considerations and user safety challenges inherent in VR and AR design. Topics such as privacy, data security, bias in algorithms, and safeguarding psychological and physical well-being are explored. Inclusivity in VR and AR design goes beyond addressing disabilities to encompass cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic diversity. The case studies presented in this chapter illustrate the transformative potential of accessible and inclusive technologies, from empowering neurodiverse individuals through VR therapy to enabling independent navigation for visually impaired users with AR. Looking forward, the future of VR and AR lies in its ability to adapt to emerging technologies and societal needs.
