Abstract

This chapter explores the key emerging technologies, design paradigms, and application domains that are likely to shape the next decade of immersive experiences. It focuses on the role of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in a rapidly evolving digital society, where technologies not only respond to human needs but anticipate, adapt to, and even amplify human potential. As VR and AR systems increasingly permeate personal, professional, and societal life, their design must be grounded in human-centered values. The chapter examines the technological trends, including artificial intelligence, cloud and edge computing, advanced haptics, brain–computer interfaces, and quantum simulation, that will shape the next generation of immersive experiences. It discusses how VR and AR will move beyond specialized applications to become integral to healthcare, education, enterprise, personal wellness, and cultural expression, enriching the human experience in ways that were once the domain of science fiction.
