Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive exploration of display configurations, key performance metrics, and the underlying technologies that drive immersive visual interfaces in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). The display system architectures for VR and AR devices are generally categorized based on their configuration, each of which impacts the visual information delivery and user experience differently. Typical headset device configurations employ occluding, optical see-through, or video see-through display systems. Other virtual reality setups include projection-based systems or handheld devices. The chapter details the critical parameters, including resolution, field of view, refresh rate, latency, luminance, contrast ratio, and optical efficiency, that influence the effectiveness of visual rendering in head-mounted displays. It discusses the primary display technologies, including liquid crystal displays, organic light emitting diodes, micro light emitting diodes, digital light processors, and laser beam scanning displays. The chapter also discusses optics for VR and AR systems.
