Somatosensory Immersion
Abstract
Somatosensory immersion refers to the degree to which touch and haptic sensations are integrated into a virtual or augmented environment to create a cohesive and realistic sensory reality. This chapter explores the physiological basis, technological foundations, and system implementations of somatosensory immersion. The somatosensory system encompasses multiple subsystems that process tactile, proprioceptive, and kinesthetic information. The mechanoreceptors convert physical stimuli into electrical signals that travel along peripheral nerves to the spinal cord and subsequently to the brain, forming an intricate communication network. Psychophysics provides essential guidelines for designing haptic feedback technologies. Temporal resolution is essential for replicating dynamic sensations. Tactile feedback involves the simulation of surface-level sensations that are perceived by the skin's mechanoreceptors. Vibration motors are among the most widely used technologies for generating tactile feedback due to their simplicity, affordability, and versatility.
