Abstract

Leachate is a crucial problem in sanitary landfills, which threatens the environment due to hazardous pollutants. Malaysia is one of the countries which faces this problem, especially for stabilised anaerobic landfill leachate (SAL). Many studies have been conducted to find an effective treatment method; however, most of the current results are unable to comply with the discharge limit of effluent. Advanced oxidation process (AOP) is considered to be a good technology to overcome this problem. This method has the capability to oxidise high organic compounds and mineralise them to inorganic matter and salts. Therefore, in this chapter, the details about landfill leachate characteristics, AOP, its application in landfill leachate and its limitations have been well discussed.
