The Crucial Role of Cultural Humility in Treating Sexual Aggression
Abstract
The Risk, Need, and Responsivity (RNR) model is the leading framework for assessing and treating criminal behavior, focusing on individual risks and needs to reduce recidivism. Its responsivity principle calls for interventions tailored to personal characteristics, including gender, age, ethnicity, learning style, motivation, cognitive abilities, and mental health. Limited research on integrating cultural responsiveness and humility into assessments and treatments for individuals with sexually aggressive behaviours. As forensic psychology continues to explore how to approach the evaluation and treatment of justice-involved individuals in a culturally responsive and humble manner, providing practical guidance on how to do so may help. Advancing the application of cultural responsivity and humility within the RNR model holds promise for improving assessment and treatment outcomes with diverse populations of sexually aggressive individuals.
