Abstract

This chapter examines the assessment and treatment of sexually aggressive transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals in the justice system, addressing a critical gap in clinical literature. It provides a cultural framework for understanding TGD attitudes, values, and experiences that may influence sexual offending behaviors. The chapter emphasizes culturally humble clinical practice, encouraging clinicians to develop knowledge, skills, and self-awareness while managing personal biases related to gender identity. Key issues discussed include the application of the responsivity principle, the management and placement of TGD inmates in correctional settings, and the interaction of biological sex and gender identity in offending behaviors. Preliminary data from the United States and international correctional systems highlight the overrepresentation of TGD individuals in custody and the complexities of their treatment and housing. Recommendations for research and practice aim to promote ethical, safe, and responsive interventions for justice-involved TGD populations.
