Neurological Conditions
Abstract
This chapter provides a general guidance on exercise selection for neurological patients. The exercises described are general guidelines and often must be adjusted to provide the most appropriate patient care. It is crucial to observe each patient's level of function through gait and postural transitions to design the most effective exercise plan. Specific techniques are used for neurological patients and can be classified as neuroinhibitory or neurofacilitatory. It also provides neurological conditions of the canine, presented in a streamlined format outlining definition, anatomy, epidemiology, etiology and pathophysiology, clinical presentation, history, physical examination, neurological examination, diagnostics, treatment, and rehabilitation. Neurological conditions include: compressive myelopathies, chronic noncompressive myelopathies, and peripheral neuropathies. The chapter helps the veterinary practitioners to find comprehensive ways to track patient progress, including limb circumference, gait analysis, goniometry, weight, pain scale, and functional outcomes.
