Abstract

This chapter introduces working careers of professional canine athletes, including the physical skills required and the impact of these jobs on the musculoskeletal system. Physical fitness is often overlooked as part of the required training. This chapter provides strategies for integrating physical fitness into the training of working dogs, focusing on conditioning, recovery postinjury, and successful return to duty. The synergy between a handler and their canine, alongside the organization's operational requirements and the nature of the work, is pivotal in formulating a comprehensive fitness program. Athletic conditioning tailored to the working dog is essential for canine working athletes to perform their duties safely and effectively.
