The Veterinary Orthotic and Prosthetic Patient
Abstract
Loss of a limb segment or limb function has a significant impact on the biomechanics of movement. Such issues cannot always be managed with surgery and/or rehabilitation. Orthotic devices (orthosis) are externally applied appliances used to modify the functional and structural characteristics of a body part. Prosthetic limbs replace a missing limb segment. A brief review of terminology; pathology amenable to these devices; and methods for case selection is provided. This chapter provides therapeutic exercises for acclimation to these devices.
