Abstract

Passive outcome measures that can be used in practice include: accelerometry, goniometry, limb circumference, thermography, canine spasticity scale, body condition score and muscle condition score. Accelerometry uses a small device usually mounted to the dog's collar that is worn continuously to measure daily activity. Goniometry evaluates passive joint range of motion in a clinical setting. Limb circumference is measured using a tape measure to measure the circumference at a specific level of a dog's forelimb or hindlimb. A canine spasticity scale has been proposed as an outcome measure for chronic thoracolumbar spinal cord injuries resulting in paralysis. Infrared thermography detects changes in surface temperature to evaluate functional changes in tissue. Body condition scoring allows the practitioner to easily assess canine body fat mass using clear descriptions of physical assessment to assign a body condition score. Muscle condition score assesses focal or generalized variations in muscle composition.
