Abstract

This chapter explores various assistive devices designed to improve ambulation, posture, and quality of life in dogs with mobility challenges. Drawing on both available studies and the author's extensive clinical experience, this chapter examines the strengths and limitations of devices, such as traction paw wear, anti-knuckling devices, harnesses, carts, and hobbles. Special attention is given to practical aspects, such as fitting and selecting the right devices based on individual patient needs, as well as the biomechanical considerations involved. Although empirical studies on canine assistive devices are limited, this chapter provides valuable insights into optimizing device use for dogs with impaired mobility, highlighting the potential benefits, drawbacks, and best practices.
