Abstract

This chapter examines the role and nuances of counterarguing in inoculation theory. Research on counterarguing—except in the case of therapeutic inoculations—largely aligns with the vaccine analogy. The chapter differentiates between counterarguments as an element of message design and counterarguing as part of the inoculation process, addressing a common conflation between the design features and the processes those features attempt to elicit. Key topics include the effects of active and passive participation in the counterarguing process, the research on subvocal counterarguing versus postinoculation talk, the role of counterarguing in therapeutic inoculation, and the effect of boosters on counterargument production. In addition, we explore various methodological approaches to measuring counterarguing output. The chapter concludes with suggestions on optimizing the success of counterarguments and refutations.
