Abstract

Contemporary inoculation scholarship has deviated from the early conceptualization of inoculation theory which was commonly defined by and restricted to the biomedical analogy, or how the analogy has been understood, as an explanation for the process and effects. Recent scholarly efforts have extended the practicality, scalability, and utility of inoculation in meaningful ways. This chapter discusses the departures from inoculation's early boundary conditions and reviews growing areas of inquiry, including therapeutic applications , cross-protection , and social diffusion through postinoculation talk in interpersonal and digital media environments.
