Beyond Threat and Counterarguing
Abstract
In addition to the original concepts identified by McGuire as underlining the process of inoculation-elicited resistance, contemporary inoculation scholarship has introduced additional mechanisms contributing to the process of resistance in addition to, or in conjunction with, threat and counterarguing. Some concepts assume multiple roles in inoculation studies, such as self-efficacy (e.g., moderator and outcome) or involvement (e.g., moderator and mediator). This chapter focuses on the roles gender, self-efficacy, message source, attitude accessibility, attitude strength (certainty or conviction), associative networks, involvement, intentions, and values play in the inoculation-elicited process of resistance to influence. This chapter explicates the intricacies of the relationships among the concepts as mentioned earlier in the process of resistance as elicited by inoculation.
