Abstract

This chapter focuses on multiple strategies to improve the strength and effectiveness of inoculation messages. Extant research advances the idea that the integration of loss-framed and controlling language, along with a language intensity level that meets receiver expectations, can each ripen conditions for the resistance process. However, future research needs to expand loss-frame inoculation findings into other contexts and nuance whether controlling language is best understood as an inoculation message enhancement or as a stand-alone attack message that necessitates an inoculation pretreatment. The authors also call for a reexamination of language expectancy violation research. Furthermore, pairs of counterarguments against the held (i.e., inoculation-enforced) attitude and the overwhelming refutations in support of the held attitude are a stalwart mechanism of inoculation-generated resistance. However, key questions remain regarding refutation content, the optimal number of counterarguments and refutations, intra-pair strength matching, and inter-pair strength ordering. The current work illuminates these research gaps and opportunities.
