Abstract

Dietetics is both an art and a science that requires the application of safe and evidence‐based, reflective practice alongside systematic clinical reasoning. There are distinct differences between a regulatory body, Health and Care Professions Council and a professional body, British Dietetic Association (BDA). Dietitians should be aware of the differences from the beginning of professional training. Autonomy can be defined as the right of self‐governance. In professional practice, professional ethical conduct is of paramount importance. The BDA's Model and Process for Nutrition and Dietetic Practice demonstrates how dietitians integrate professional knowledge and skills into evidence‐based decision‐making and is the cornerstone of dietetic practice. Clinical governance is the framework through which organisations and their staff are accountable for continuously improving the quality of care. Preceptorship is a structured programme of professional support and development designed to improve registrant confidence as they transition into any new role.
