Abstract

Healthy, sustainable diets are those which deliver positive outcomes for human, animal and planetary health, particularly in comparison with the current average diet. Plant‐rich diets are associated with significant benefits for human and planetary health. Healthy, sustainable diets can contain moderate amounts of animal‐based foods like meat, dairy, eggs and seafood where appropriate. Many key global policies are based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the 2019 Paris Agreement and the World Health Organisation Sustainable Diets Guiding Principles. The first step in designing and delivering effective approaches to enable uptake of plant‐rich diets is to ascertain the key drivers and barriers. Food choice is driven by a range of psychological, social and environmental factors. Many nutrition professionals are already embedding sustainability into their practice and advocating for improvements across the food system for planetary health, as well as advancing sustainable food systems in organisations and communities.
