Abstract

This introductory chapter aims to provide the core concepts of bioelectrocatalysis, presenting the theory underlying the electron transfer process between a biological catalyst and an electrode surface for both isolated enzymes and intact microorganisms. The main challenges of bioelectrocatalysis are introduced, along with an overview of emerging approaches to address these challenges. Enzymatic and microbial electrocatalysis are then extensively discussed in Chapters 2 and 3 of the book. The other chapters of the book build upon the fundamental aspects presented herein to unveil a broad variety of practical applications of bioelectrocatalysis spanning from current generation, biosensing, wastewater treatment, and bioelectrosynthesis.
