Abstract

Biosensors based on bioelectrocatalysis have been developed for a range of applications. In this chapter, ex situ biosensors focusing on measuring organic carbon load, toxic compounds, and explosives will be discussed. Ex situ biosensors are those that are designed, not for use in the field, but for use in a laboratory setting after samples have been collected. This chapter will discuss the two major types of bioelectrocatalytic sensors, amperometric and self-powered, as well as the variety of possible catalysts. Finally, the chapter will conclude with a discussion of emerging trends and future outlook for these biosensors.
