Biofuel Cells and Biosolar Cells
Abstract
The coupling of biological catalysts to electrodes has allowed obtaining power generation systems utilizing renewable fuels, due to the unique catalytic activity of the biological component utilized. The biohybrid systems obtained are referred to as biofuel cells or biosolar cells, depending on the utilized biological catalysts, the type of electron donors, and the energy source utilized (i.e. light, fuels). The fundamental principles of both biofuel cells and biosolar cells are presented to later focus on their practical applications and the most recent research approaches that allowed obtaining systems with improved stability, higher power performances, and cost-effectiveness.
