Electrosynthesis
Abstract
Electrochemistry provides a platform that, upon polarization, can drive reduction and oxidation reactions. This feature opens the possibility to control the outcome of those transformations, allowing the synthesis of large molecules by electrochemical assistance. The control of the reaction can be reached by the inclusion of catalysts, in particular biological ones such as enzymes and microorganisms that favor a specific reaction while suppressing side reactions. A set of highly interesting examples of biocatalyzed electrosynthesis reactions is discussed in the present chapter, focusing on enzymatic and microbial reactions to reduce CO 2 , synthesize NH 3 , H 2 , and other organic molecules.
