Abstract

This chapter considers various disciplines of professional consultants, and not just those who undertake administrative duties on the client's behalf - that is under the main contract between the ‘Employer’ or the ‘Client’ and the contractor. It considers additional fee claims from consultants such as project managers, architects, contract administrators, the supervisor, employer's agents, civil engineers, structural engineers, building services engineers, quantity surveyors, interior and landscape designers and the like. The consultant's core obligation will be to perform the ‘services’ for the client, which should be set out in the appointment. Consultants' claims typically differ from those raised by main contractors and sub-contractors, as most only seek additional payment, rather than an extension of time to avoid delay damages. Quantity surveyors are often careful when compiling budgets and financial reports for their clients.
