Recent Advances in Cardiovascular Plasma Proteomics
Abstract
Recent advances in cardiovascular plasma proteomics, particularly through mass spectrometry (MS)-based methodologies, have significantly enhanced the clinical landscape of cardiovascular disease (CVD) diagnosis and management. The introduction of novel mass spectrometers and advanced acquisition methods combined with novel enrichment methods have enabled the comprehensive profiling of plasma proteins, facilitating the identification of predictive biomarkers associated with CVDs. Affinity-based assays have facilitated high-throughput biomarker discovery and validation of plasma protein biomarker research in CVD. The identification of predictive biomarkers has been a focal point in recent research, with studies demonstrating the potential of various circulating proteins to stratify patients based on their risk of adverse cardiovascular events. Moreover, machine-learning approaches have also been integrated into biomarker discovery, allowing for the identification of complex patterns within proteomic data that correlate with cardiovascular disease progression. Finally, the use of dried blood spots has emerged as a practical method for plasma sample collection and is foreseen to be extremely useful in large-scale cardiovascular screening programs.
