Abstract

In this chapter, we propose a cyber mission impact resilience assessment framework, called CYBER-MIRA, to evaluate the effectiveness of the resilience of a tactical machine learning (ML)-based mission system. We will investigate the interdependencies between the key components of a mission system, their vulnerabilities, their exploitability by attackers, and the defense countermeasures against the attacks. The proposed CYBER-MIRA will measure the resilience of the tactical ML-based object detection mission system in an Internet of Things (IoT) environment by assessing fault tolerance, adaptability, recoverability, and transformability in the presence of adversarial attacks and network dynamics in distributed resource-constrained tactical IoT environments. The attack–defense interactions are represented using hypergame theory, taking perceived uncertainty in a player's belief into account. The uncertainty in the opinion about the system's resilience is also introduced into the reasoning model by considering subjective Bayesian networks (SBNs). In addition, the CYBER-MIRA considers how efficiently the mission can be completed with the minimum resource consumption and overhead generated while providing seamless services under highly contested network environments.
