Energy Crops for Butanol Fermentation Process
Abstract
The pressing issues of rising global temperatures and diminishing fossil fuel reserves underscore the need for urgent solutions in shaping a sustainable energy future. Biobutanol, derived from nonfood energy crops, emerges as a particularly attractive alternative fuel due to its high energy density, low hygroscopicity, and compatibility with existing infrastructure. This chapter explores the potential of various energy crops as feedstock for biobutanol production, evaluating promising species worldwide and their suitability for diverse regions. We address key challenges such as biomass recalcitrance and conversion inefficiencies, highlighting ongoing research endeavors in fermentation technologies and advanced conversion processes. Furthermore, we examine techno-economic considerations, including the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and other technological advancements in enhancing biobutanol production efficiency. In conclusion, fully harnessing the potential of energy crops for biobutanol production necessitates a comprehensive approach to address economic, environmental, and technological challenges. Continued research and development efforts, bolstered by supportive policies and diversification strategies, promise to chart a course toward a sustainable biofuel future.
