Abstract

The interconnections between water, food, energy, climate change, and ecosystems form a complex and dynamic nexus that profoundly impacts sustainable development and resource management. This chapter explores the complex interactions that make up the Water–Food–Energy–Climate–Ecosystem (WFECE) nexus, outlining its historical evolution and looking at its essential components. Along with climate-related nexus, it classifies many nexus types, such as the Water–Food, Water–Energy, and comprehensive Water–Food–Energy nexus. The water, food, and energy sectors, as well as their interactions, are the main topics of discussion when examining cross-sectoral approaches within the WFE nexus. Numerous modeling approaches from multi-regional nexus networks to Water–Energy nexus modeling are covered in order to comprehend and analyze the nexus. This chapter emphasizes how crucial it is to understand the WFE nexus in order to manage resources effectively and demonstrate sustainable development. It discusses the particular difficulties presented by the WFE nexus issue and looks into ways to connect the nexus and associated ecological processes to climate change. In the end, this chapter highlights the fundamental requirement of innovative thinking and collaborations in order to tackle the intricate problems that the WFECE nexus presents. This will help to ensure that future generations may live in a sustainable manner.
