Moving Toward a Non‐conflictual Use of Resources
Abstract
This chapter explores non-conflictual resource use and emphasizes its critical role in achieving sustainable and equitable development. Using a comprehensive literature review as the primary method, it introduces non-conflictual resource management as an approach rooted in collaborative decision making, resource sharing, and inclusivity, aiming to balance diverse stakeholder needs. This chapter reviews theoretical frameworks, such as the Tragedy of the Commons and Collective Action Theory. This connects them to practical strategies for promoting equity, sustainability, and transparency in resource governance. It highlights key principles, including equitable access, environmental stewardship, and inclusive governance, alongside innovative tools, such as policy reforms, economic instruments, and community-based management. Drawing on global case studies, this study illustrates the successful implementation of these principles, underscoring the importance of multistakeholder collaboration in addressing complex resource conflicts. This chapter identifies gaps in current practices and proposes future directions, such as integrated governance frameworks and technological innovations, to enhance resilience to resource-based conflicts. This chapter provides actionable insights into fostering sustainable and non-conflictual resource use in a rapidly changing global context by advocating equitable, adaptive, and participatory approaches.
