The Relationship Between Urban Infrastructure, Climate Change, and Sustainable Development
Abstract
The relationship between urban infrastructure (UI), climate change, and sustainable development is a critical and complex area of study. Climate change has significantly increased the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, leading to global environmental, social, and economic disruptions. This chapter explores the intricate connections between urbanization, climate change, and sustainable development, emphasizing the urgent need for integrated urban planning and resilient infrastructure. As the majority of the global population now resides in urban areas, cities are both contributors to and victims of climate change, producing approximately 80% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This chapter discusses how urban areas can mitigate these impacts through low-carbon development strategies, such as promoting green buildings, sustainable transportation, and energy efficiency. Furthermore, it highlights the challenges faced by emerging nations, where rapid industrialization and urbanization have compounded social and environmental issues. By examining various adaptive strategies and policy recommendations, this chapter aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how UI can be designed and managed to foster sustainable development in the face of climate change. The insights presented will be valuable for policymakers, urban planners, and researchers working toward creating resilient and sustainable urban environments.
