The Nexus of Ecohydrology: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Sustainable Water Resource Management
Abstract
This chapter explores the evolving field of ecohydrology, a subdiscipline that investigates the intricate interplay between hydrological processes and ecosystems. It delves into the historical roots of this concept, tracing its origins to various interdisciplinary studies and its formalization within the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme. Ecohydrology emphasizes the importance of understanding and managing water resources within the context of ecological integrity, recognizing the critical role of ecosystems in the water cycle. The chapter highlights the multidisciplinary nature of ecohydrology, requiring integration of knowledge from hydrology, ecology, biology, geography, and other relevant disciplines. It underscores the need for transdisciplinary research that involves not only academic researchers but also stakeholders such as land managers and the public. Furthermore, the chapter discusses the concept of ecosystem services and its implications for water resource management. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the value of ecosystem services and incorporating them into decision-making processes. The chapter concludes by exploring the application of ecohydrological principles in the context of the water-energy-food-ecology (WEFE) nexus, particularly in arid regions, where sustainable water resource management is crucial for ensuring food security, ecological integrity, and achieving environmental sustainability goals.
