Water‐Energy‐Food‐ CO 2 Nexus
Abstract
Water-Energy-Food-CO 2 (WEF-CO 2 ) Nexus is an important concept to illustrate that resource systems are interconnected within sustainable development. In this chapter, we explore the historical background of the WEF-CO 2 Nexus, its theoretical corroborations, and the conceptual model supporting the WEF-CO 2 Nexus, especially notable interdependencies along with climate change, population growth, and resource scarcity as pressing vertically integrated challenges. Interdisciplinary systems thinking is discussed as a critical tool for negotiating the nexus, drawing insight into interlinked feedback loops, trade-offs, and dynamic relationships among sectors. Indicators and metrics to measure interlinkages and address guides toward sustainable resource management (e.g., footprints of water and energy, food security indices, and CO 2 emissions). This chapter further explores the interlinkages within the nexus, for full potential realization, such as water for energy generation, energy for water distribution, or biofuels that connect food and energy systems. Potential emerging technologies, including precision agriculture, advancements in renewable energy, and improved water treatment, are identified as pathways for optimizing resource utilization and minimizing environmental impacts. Energy and food coupled with water are found to be the key factors identified for the important advances made in the highly raised integrated policy and regulatory frameworks, adaptable agricultural practices, resource recovery, and cross-sectoral collaboration. The conclusion emphasizes interdependent collaboration between policymakers, scientists, and practitioners in addressing global issues through a holistic and integrated approach. Realization and delivery of goals by stakeholders in offering interdisciplinary research, advanced technologies, and inclusive policies would ensure the sustainability and resilience of the WEF-CO 2 Nexus, effective resource management, and sustainable development against the challenges of the twenty-first century.
