Abstract

Hydropower remains one of the most significant renewable energy sources, providing a reliable and sustainable means of electricity generation. However, conventional hydropower systems often disrupt natural water cycles, aquatic habitats, and sediment transport, leading to ecological imbalances. Harmonizing hydropower engineering with ecohydrological innovations presents a sustainable approach to energy production that integrates hydrological processes with ecological principles. This chapter explores the intersection of hydropower engineering and ecohydrology, emphasizing nature-based solutions, environmental flow management, and adaptive reservoir operations to minimize ecological disturbances. Key topics include hydrological modeling, sediment transport management, fish-friendly turbine designs, and wetland restoration strategies. By incorporating ecohydrological principles into hydropower planning and operations, energy generation can be optimized while preserving aquatic biodiversity, maintaining water quality, and ensuring long-term sustainability. Through case studies and advanced modeling techniques, this chapter demonstrates how integrated hydropower-ecohydrology frameworks can enhance water resource management, mitigate climate change impacts, and support resilient ecosystems. The findings highlight the need for interdisciplinary collaboration between engineers, hydrologists, and ecologists to develop innovative, sustainable, and adaptive hydropower solutions that balance energy security with environmental stewardship.
