Development‐Environment Nexus
Abstract
This book chapter examines the relationship between development and the environment, focusing on agricultural development. The study begins with an introduction to the role of development, particularly industrial and economic, on the environment, highlighting the necessity of considering the environmental consequences of development. It then delves into the connection between the environment and development, followed by an analysis of the link between agricultural development and environmental impact. The chapter further explores conservation agriculture strategies aimed at environmental protection, emphasizing that achieving agricultural development should prioritize environmental preservation. The importance of this review lies in its evaluation of the environmental consequences of development, a major concern in the contemporary world. Topics reviewed include the adverse effects of agricultural development on the environment, such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, soil erosion, and land subsidence due to excessive groundwater exploitation. In this research, the environmental impact of the agricultural sector was examined, and several conservation agriculture strategies were proposed to mitigate these effects. The most notable strategies include new tillage methods, Good Agricultural Practices, Integrated Pest Management, organic farming, and precision agriculture. Consequently, policymakers and development planners are encouraged to adopt strategies such as precision agriculture, organic farming, the production of healthy crops, and conservation agriculture to protect the environment alongside development efforts.
