Abstract

The interplay between trade and the environment has become increasingly prominent on the global stage. As globalization advances, nations are faced with the challenge of balancing economic growth through trade with the imperative of environmental sustainability. This chapter explores the Trade-Environment Nexus (TEN) and its implications for global sustainability. It offers a comprehensive framework for understanding the complex interactions among trade policies, environmental protection, and sustainable development goals (SDGs). Drawing on insights from various disciplines, including economics, environmental science, and policy studies, this chapter examines key issues, challenges, and opportunities at the intersection of trade and the environment. It discusses the role of international trade agreements, regulatory frameworks, and market mechanisms in promoting sustainable trade practices while safeguarding environmental integrity. Furthermore, it explores case studies and best practices from different regions to illustrate successful approaches to integrating trade and environmental considerations. By providing a holistic perspective on the TEN, this chapter aims to inform policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders about the importance of adopting integrated approaches that prioritize both economic prosperity and environmental stewardship in the pursuit of global sustainability.
