Abstract

The world's population is projected to surge, with almost three-quarters of global residents living in cities by 2050. This urbanization phenomenon will necessitate significant new infrastructure development, posing substantial environmental challenges. This chapter explores the intricate relationship between environmental issues and mobility forms, offering a unique overview of environmental stress caused by transportation, including ecosystem damage, greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, and waste generation. In contrast, the impacts of the environment on mobility patterns, including disrupted mobility, human migration, and changed travel modes based on various case studies, are reviewed. As this chapter moves forward, the importance of real-world implications of environment-mobility nexus (EMN) is revealed, and shortcomings supported by previous research are identified. Following a discussion of current policies addressing EMN, key recommendations for future policy development and potential research areas to advance understanding and solutions for scholars and decision makers are offered.
