Energy‐Landscape‐Livestock‐Production Nexus
Abstract
Global demand for agricultural yields, particularly livestock products, is rising due to population growth and economic development, straining water, land, and energy resources. Agricultural trade, while essential for meeting demand, often masks inefficiencies and unsustainable practices within resource-intensive trade systems. This chapter examines the interconnected energy-landscape-livestock-production nexus, analyzing the complex interactions between landscape management, livestock systems, and energy use. It explores the environmental impacts of livestock production, the energy demands of modern agriculture, and the role of landscapes in providing ecosystem services crucial for livestock. This chapter proposes solutions to strengthen these linkages and enhance sustainability. Precision Livestock Farming (PLF), utilizing data and technology, emerges as a key strategy for optimizing animal welfare, resource use, and productivity. Integrating the Internet of Things (IoT) in livestock farming enables real-time monitoring and data-driven decisions. The bioeconomy's potential to create closed-loop systems, valorizing agricultural waste and promoting sustainable production, is also explored. Crucially, this chapter addresses policy implications, advocating for integrated, cross-sectoral approaches that recognize resource interconnectedness. It emphasizes policies incentivizing sustainable practices, promoting technological advancements, supporting research in sustainable livestock systems, and ensuring equitable access to resources. By examining these interconnected elements and proposing actionable strategies, this chapter aims to inform policymakers, researchers, and practitioners, fostering a resilient, efficient, and sustainable livestock sector capable of meeting global protein demands while minimizing environmental impact. It highlights the need for holistic solutions that balance productivity with environmental stewardship and social equity within this critical nexus.
