Future Directions and Challenges in Smart Agriculture and Cybersecurity
Abstract
Smart agriculture has ushered in unparalleled efficiency and accuracy with the quick integration of Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and sophisticated sensing technologies. But it has also created unprecedented cybersecurity concerns, rendering agricultural systems more susceptible to cyber-attacks. This review consolidates results from 25 recent publications to provide an extensive overview of present security threats, vulnerabilities, and countermeasures in digital agriculture. The principal threats are data breaches, denial-of-service attacks, side-channel attacks, and unauthorized IoT-enabled farm infrastructure access. Some research emphasizes the absence of standardization, minimal awareness, and resource-limited devices as substantial hindrances to successful cybersecurity. Additionally, the progression towards Agriculture 4.0 and 5.0 exacerbates issues related to data privacy, trust, and system robustness. Some discussed emerging countermeasures involve machine learning-based intrusion detection systems, blockchain, explainable AI (XAI), and secure architectures. The review also underscores the role of cybersecurity in agricultural supply chains and green agriculture. The future of secure smart agriculture hinges on teamwork-based research, scalable defense models, and the fusion of ethical, regulatory, and technology frameworks. This paper contributes toward a platform understanding of the digital security environment in agriculture, the identification of key gaps, and potential future areas for effective cybersecurity implementation.
