Renewable Energy Integration in Data Centers
Abstract
Data centers are major energy consumers, but there are growing environmental motivations and cost incentives to transition their power supply from fossil fuels to renewable sources. Integrating renewables like solar and wind energy introduces unpredictability and variability that pose new challenges for maintaining the 24×7 uptime and quality of service demanded by cloud applications and internet services. This paper provides a comprehensive review of strategies and technologies to increase renewable penetration in data center facilities. We analyze the impact of supply intermittency on power distribution, cooling, server operation, and network infrastructure within modern data centers. Techniques to mitigate these effects are surveyed, including intelligent workload scheduling, real-time performance modulation, fast server suspension/resume, advanced battery systems, geo-distributed failover computing, and integrated photovoltaic panels. The effectiveness of renewables integration approaches and the feasibility of a full transition to sustainable power are assessed across data center scales. We highlight open research problems related to reliable and economical 100% renewable data center implementation. The discussion focuses on both today's grid-supported facilities and forward-looking fully off-grid designs. Our analysis aims to inform and accelerate advances toward carbon-neutral internet infrastructure.
