Abstract

This chapter covers details about all the required construction phases, from off-site fabrication to on-site storage, rigging, and assembly. Common fabrication needs include the shaping of members, cutting of slots, and drilling of holes for columns, beams, and braces, and the routing of door and window openings for CLT wall panels. Glued connections are specified, they are preferably installed in a factory setting under a dry and temperature-controlled environment. Preparation for glued connections consists of drilling and cleaning of the hole, degreasing and cleaning of the steel part, and then application of the adhesive. Larger connections in mass timber structures are almost always predrilled in both wood and steel. When a mass timber element is delivered to the construction site, it is typically completely wrapped and therefore well protected.
