Abstract

The efficient management of biological solid waste has become a pressing global concern due to its significant environmental impacts and the burgeoning demand for sustainable agricultural practices. This chapter brings together comprehensive information to assert that biological waste can be converted into a resource or a raw material for value addition. These wastes, if not treated properly, may harm human health and our nature. Therefore, these wastes need to be treated or utilized in various applications. Waste valorization encompasses the natural recycling principles of zero waste, loop closing, and underlines the importance of sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives of reduce, reuse, and recycle the waste into biofuel, biofertilizer, manure, compost, vermicomposting, biopesticides and bioplastics. These methods not only facilitate the conversion of waste into nutrient-rich organic fertilizers and value-added products but also contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the conservation of natural resources. Worldwide, a huge amount of biological solid wastes and by-products containing valuable bioactive compounds are generated, especially throughout the entire supply chain. Although many countries implement policies to reduce biological solid wastes and by-products, and different management methods are available to utilize biological solid wastes, they are still produced annually. In conclusion, the valorization of biological solid waste holds immense promise for addressing the dual challenges of waste management and sustainable agriculture. By harnessing the potential of biological solid waste as a valuable resource, we can create a more resilient and environmentally sustainable agricultural sector, thereby contributing to food security and ecosystem health on a global scale.
