Commercially Exploitable Probiotic Microorganisms for Humans
Abstract
Probiotics are live microorganisms that confer health benefits when administered in adequate amounts and have garnered significant attention for their role in enhancing gut health, immunity, and overall well-being. The gastrointestinal environment contains important bacterial and yeast strains. These include Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. rhamnosus, L. plantarum, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and B. breve . They can live there and offer many health benefits, such as better digestion, less inflammation, and a stronger immune system. These beneficial microorganisms help maintain a balanced gut microbiota, which is essential for optimal digestive function and immune response. The human gut microbiota, which is made up of more than 100 trillion symbiotic microbes, is very important to health because it affects things like the formation of epithelial cells, the control of metabolism, and the immune system. Chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, and liver disorders have been associated with dysbiosis of the gut microbiota. By supporting gut health, probiotics contribute to overall well-being and may reduce the risk of various health issues. In recent years, Indian consumers have increasingly recognized the significance of nutrition and health. The standard of nourishment they consume has also increased. Consumers are placing greater importance on a healthy diet compared to physical activities. There is a shift toward health supplements that may have harmful effects. In today's lifestyle, the market has observed a rise in the sales of health products globally among health-conscious consumers, leading to the emergence of new health food categories. Currently, probiotics are in an early stage of development, and awareness of them as a food supplement is primarily confined to urban regions. It is essential to share information regarding their application and the technology involved in preparing them for convenient domestic use, particularly in Indian rural areas, targeting affordability for the lower-income demographic. Consistent consumption of probiotics may enhance overall well-being and decrease reliance on pharmaceuticals and healthcare costs. This chapter looks at the health benefits of probiotics in the food and drug industries. It does this by focusing on different types of important probiotic bacterial strains and products made with these probiotic microorganisms, as well as how they can be used in other fields.
