Abstract

Market demand for potential probiotics has surged, emphasizing the importance of dietary supplements. Thus, understanding the mechanism of action of probiotics is essential for leading a healthier life. These microorganisms positively impact human nutrition by inhibiting pathogen development, enhancing gut barrier function, regulating the immune system, and synthesizing neurotransmitters. Some mechanisms include mucin protein induction, tight junction protein control, altered immunological responses, and competition for adhesion sites with pathogens. Probiotics generate antimicrobial substances, affect intestinal epithelial cell renewal, and exhibit species-specific mechanisms, including vitamin synthesis and toxin neutralization. Recent research advancements have deepened our understanding of probiotics, highlighting their diverse mechanisms and potential health benefits, reaffirming their role as a valuable supplement for human nutrition and health. Computational techniques enable the analysis of vast datasets, including genomic, transcriptomic, and metagenomic data, facilitating the identification of specific genes and metabolic pathways associated with probiotic functionality. Moreover, in silico models aid in predicting the impact of probiotics on the gut environment, offering insights into their potential health benefits. The use of computational simulations also allows researchers to explore species-specific mechanisms and understand the dynamic interplay between probiotics and the host at a systems level. By leveraging computational approaches, researchers can accelerate the pace of discovery in the probiotics field, paving the way for targeted interventions and personalized approaches to harness the full potential of these beneficial microorganisms for human health.
