Introduction to Sustainable Development and Disaster Management
Abstract
Sustainable development, a concept that balances economic growth, environmental protection, and social equity, has gained significant global recognition over recent decades. Rooted in the interconnectedness of economy, environment, and society, this holistic approach aims to meet current needs without compromising future generations’ ability to meet their own. The historical trajectory of sustainable development, marked by key milestones such as the 1987 Brundtland Commission report and the 2015 adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlights its evolution as a global priority. Key principles including intergenerational equity, biodiversity conservation, and the precautionary approach shape sustainability policies worldwide. Concurrently, disaster management plays a critical role in mitigating risks posed by both natural and human-made hazards, ensuring community resilience through phases such as preparedness, response, and recovery. As challenges like climate change and resource depletion intensify, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into both sustainable development and disaster management presents new opportunities to enhance predictive capacities, optimize resource allocation, and build more resilient communities. This paper explores the synergies between AI, sustainability, and disaster management, addressing the critical need for global cooperation, technological innovation, and inclusive, sustainable practices.
